Our History
The Kansas LGBTQ+ Community was born in a time before marriage equality was the law of the land. We organized rallies and events advocating for the right to marry and stood united against discrimination. Through social gatherings and community-building efforts, we created spaces that brought people together from all walks of life, connecting hearts and minds in ways that inspired change.
Our events welcomed influential LGBTQ+ leaders who shared their wisdom and vision, sparking hope and courage in our community. We hosted holiday celebrations for those without family support, offering a sense of belonging during challenging times. Open mic nights amplified diverse voices, creating a platform for self-expression and acceptance. These safe spaces became a lifeline for many and a reminder that no one is alone in their journey.
After the hard-fought victory for marriage equality, we noticed a shift. The unified message that once connected our efforts became less defined, making it difficult to chart a clear path forward. Life also led us to new opportunities across the country and around the world, and for a time, our collective efforts paused.
But the spirit of the Kansas LGBTQ+ Community never faded. Reflecting on those early days, we realized that our greatest impact was rooted in the kindness, love, and acceptance we extended to others. So many people shared how we made them feel welcome in a state often seen as conservative and unyielding.
In a country increasingly divided by hatred and fear, we are recommitting to the values that built our foundation. We long for a return to a community where people can simply be themselves, free from judgment or exclusion, we want to offer positivity, inclusivity, and genuine connection.
The Kansas LGBTQ+ Community is stepping forward once again, now as a beacon of hope. Through kindness, love, and acceptance, we aim to inspire personal growth, nurture collaboration, and rise above the negativity that surrounds us.
